Most of our life is spent in buildings, be it our home or the office. But have you ever thought about how these premises affect you? Of course, it is clear that your home and workplace should be cosy, comfortable and functional, but most importantly – they should be BENEFICIAL to all inhabitants! When choosing a living place or arranging your workplace, almost everyone usually follows the criteria: ‘I like it’ or ‘I don’t like it’; ‘it is convenient for me’ or ‘it is not convenient for me’ etc. But all these criteria don’t necessarily mean that the chosen place will be beneficial, i.e. bring prosperity in life and business, improvements to health or happiness in relationships.
If you remembered how your life changed each time you moved to a new home or office premises, then you would notice interconnections between the move and the changes in life and health (whether for better or worse). It happens, because space interacts with a person and it affects everyone, who spends a long time there.

Vastu Shastra is a Vedic science, which tells about the influence that room space has upon people. Especially those premises, where people spend the most of their time at. The greatness and simplicity of Vastu are in the fact that it is interconnected with all fields of life and all Vedic sciences, especially Jyotisha Veda (Vedic astrology). You will be quite surprised how much a house or an appartement can tell about its inhabitants. And how much can be found out about the business and its future, by analysing the layout of the office building in relation to the cardinal directions and how the building has been built. It is similar to analysing an astrological chart, but this time the living or working space is analyzed.
Vastu Shastra teaches us to spot the link between the premises and life. But not all people (even though they have the same anomalies in their living places) will suffer equally with the same consequences in health and life. Those effected the most will be the ones, who have corresponding tendencies in their astrological birth charts. For instance, there are certain violations of Vastu, which can dramatically increase the risk of cancer, but only if that person’s horoscope also shows a tendency to this disease. However, there are often situations, when ‘like attracts like’ karmic law works and a person with an inclination to cancer will choose or find himself in such premises, which have this tendency. We both have observed that countless times in our practice. Therefore, by analysing the property, it is possible to determine what kind of problems the owner or the tenant and his family members have and what illnesses they suffer from.
Each cardinal direction has its ruling Element (Earth, Water, Wind or Fire). When you look at the property’s layout, the main consideration is whether each ‘process’, which is happening at the property, is taking place in the corresponding area. For example, all processes involving water (bathroom, swimming pool, pond, etc.) should be placed in the direction, which is related to the Element of Water. The same applies to the other Primary Elements, which are Fire, Earth, Air and Akasha (Space). For example, the following fiery processes are related to the primary element Fire: cooking, bathing and making love. However, the primary element Earth, being the heaviest and inert of all, governs such heavy and static processes as sleeping, placement of built-in wardrobes, cupboards, etc.
Layout variations of the premises are endless, and so are people’s horoscopes and destinies. The consciousness of a particular person or a group of people will be connected with a certain layout of a appartement  or office. It means that according to the layout of a dwelling or an office, it will be possible to determine the processes happening in the lives of those people.

Vastu Shastra is one of the Vedic Sciences. These sciences, in general, are called Sanatana Dharma. According to Sanskrit, it means ‘eternal knowledge on the proper conduct of everyday life.’ This knowledge is based on three main cornerstones – Vedas, Yoga, and Tantra. The four Vedas – Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda – together with such subordinate Vedas as Ayurveda, Vastu Shastra, Hatha Yoga, Jyotisha Veda and many other Vedic sciences, tell us about the laws of Nature and the Universe and their impact on people.
‘Yoga’ means the ability to connect with the Divine in yourself and Nature, while the method of doing so is called Tantra. Tantra is a technique, which contributes to happiness as the state of consciousness. If you manage to change your consciousness with the help of Veda, Yoga, and Tantra, then great and positive changes may occur in your life.
Life is a reflection of consciousness, and it means that other people or processes cannot be the cause of any problem. Therefore, you ought to start with your own consciousness – then (and only then) everything else will change around you. At first, this is difficult to comprehend; often we can hear people say ‘it’s all in your head’, but in reality the head with all its thoughts dwells within the consciousness, which structures our daily lives, determine our thoughts, likes and dislikes, desires, possibilities, sicknesses, obstacles etc. We may think that we make deliberate decisions in our everyday life, but once you start learning Vedic sciences, you realize that there are almost none. In this case the layouts of your appartement, house or office are the reflections of your consciousness and it is the reason why it is possible tell what is happening at the moment in your life and what the future may bring. You know, there is a common proverb: ‘Tell me who your friend is, and I will tell who you are.’ This can be rephrased as: ‘Show me your property layout, and I will tell who you are, what problems you have and what awaits you in the future.’
We first heard about Vastu Shastra in our Guru Shiva’s lectures. Since then Atis has already consulted thousands of people, drawing countless sketches of private houses, apartment buildings, offices and even industrial buildings. And more importantly, he has suggested compensations for cases of violation of Vastu Shastra principles as well. However, back then in 2002 it was something absolutely new to us, when we both diligently studied all Vedic sciences. We remember when Shiva (in one of the Vastu Shastra lectures) began a new theme about the violation of Vastu principles and their impact on people. One of the violations of Vastu principles is a situation, where the kitchen is located in the north-east corner of the house, and the plot on which the house stands is missing the north-east corner. At that moment Atis became numb because it was the story of his parents’ first family home. A property of this shape and the particular location of the kitchen meant a man’s premature death from a heart disease or cancer-related diseases, as well as bankruptcy for those living in the house.
Back then, his parents had their own company of architectural design. His mother worked as an architect, and his father was the chief engineer of their projects. The mother designed their own house according to the Soviet standards. At that time, it was not allowed to build a house bigger than 140 square meters, but for them, it was like a castle, because previously they were living in a dormitory only 24 square meters big (small). It is a wonderful feeling to move into a new house! However, at that time his parents did not know anything about the rules of Vastu Shastra.
In his family all the misfortune started with bankruptcy, then Atis’ father passed away from heart disease and his grandfather (who also lived in the house) died of a cancer-related illness. The house was gone and Atis moved to another city to begin his studies at a university. So this is a vivid example of how Vastu works.
During our 18 years of living together, we have lived in different properties. We have had seven serious moves, apart from renting houses in Jurmala for summer. We must admit that it has been difficult to find a dwelling which would be good or even just satisfactory according to Vastu principles. That is why at times we had to choose ‘the less evil’ option and move into an appartement or house, which had some violations of Vastu principles. Vastu Shastra tells us not only about the rules and demands, applicable to any space but also different compensations, which are needed for neutralizing any imperfection. And this was exactly what was done in the case of some minor Vastu principle offence.
A telling example from our lives (about Vastu compensations for neutralizing any violations in the living place) is an appartement we rented in Jurmala for only 4 – 5 months. The kitchen was located in the northwest corner, and according to the principles of Vastu Shastra, it means unease and nervous system problems, for a woman in particular. Shortly after we were settled in this appartment, Linda began to have emotional problems – crying for no reason, panic attacks, etc. However, after we deployed a proper compensation i.e. Yantras, the problem disappeared swiftly.
Another example from our experience is an appartement which we rented in Riga. There was another door (which was as an entrance to the back room of the passageway) located opposite to the entrance door. Such an arrangement of doors indicates a risk of being burgled. Upon moving into this appartment, we had placed specific Yantras to avoid this risk, but despite this fact, a theft occurred. From the shelf (at the entrance) a handbag was stolen containing car keys, documents, and a wallet. Consequently, Linda’s car was also stolen. Thanks to compensations, a few days later the police found the car and everything ended happily. It is important to understand that these specific compensations, which people can use to avoid such situations, do not cancel them out, but they are capable of rectifying the outcome.
However, there was another interesting circumstance in this event. Linda’s Vastu Shastra notebook was in the stolen handbag, which, presumably, had fallen out (or it was deliberately dropped, being considered worthless) while the thieves were running down the stairs. In fact, this notebook had the highest value, far greater than the other items which were in the handbag! It was the result of Linda’s many years of work. It possessed precious information and knowledge. One cannot put a value on knowledge. The loss of the notebook would have been the greatest loss for us, but, fortunately, it came back faster than the car. Atis found the notebook on the staircase. For a random person not connected with the matters of Yoga and Vastu Shastra in particular, it was a simple notebook of little importance. Needless to say, for us, it was a priceless treasure.
After the World War II, when the trend of building appartements in blocks came around, standard layouts were commonly adopted and, among other features, they placed kitchens in the northeast or northwest. At that time, it was justified as a sensible solution because these two directions (NW and NE) were less sunny, and therefore food products would not expire so quickly. However, Vastu Shastra recommends placing of the kitchen in the southeast corner. This particular compass direction is managed by Agni (the Fire element). Therefore, everything connected with fire should be placed on the southeast side of the building or the appartement. This ensures prosperity, harmonious relationships, contributes to the couple’s private life, improves health and strengthens the digestive system and promotes the ability to make decisions in life properly. Conversely, if the kitchen is placed in the northeast or northwest (as it is mainly in the standard layouts), then there might be an unfavorable influence on the person living in this property if his destiny allows it. It can be seen in each person’s individual horoscope. The kitchen placed in the northeast may cause the following issues: problems with the head, problems with eyesight, teeth, and hearing, weak digestive system, and troubles with mental processes. Moreover, there might be a brain hemorrhage, stroke, epilepsy, lack of energy, problems in relationships with both husband and children, as well as miscarriage and so on. But do not worry, a person may encounter only those problems, which are determined by each person’s individual karma, which, as we mentioned earlier, is written in the Vedic horoscope. The kitchen placed in the northwest corner may lead to increased costs for men, but for women, it may cause an inadequate perception of reality; it can also make a woman insecure, overly emotional, touchy and easily irritated.
It is interesting to observe the development of your consciousness by analysing the living place according to the Vastu Shastra principles. After we had finished studying Vastu Shastra, we decided to change the living place, because there were too many violations, which couldn’t be resolved. Certain remedial Yantras were put in the appartement, but we knew, they can help only in neutralizing the problem at best – they couldn’t remove the defect. We started to looking for a new appartement, but we couldn’t find one that would be at least somewhat in agreement with Vastu Shastra principles. We thought then that it was a ‘mission impossible.’ However, over time, looking back at the seven places where we’ve stayed, we see the growth of our consciousness, and hence the quality of our lives. How come?
These results are not surprising to us. Spiritual practice, Yoga, Mantras chanting, Pranayama, meditation and the wisdom of Vedic sciences in everyday life, changes the fate of every human and transforms consciousness. As each specific problem disappeared from our consciousness, each time we moved, we found ourselves living in a better home. And, of course, by ‘better,’ we mean it was corresponding to the laws of Vastu Shastra to a higher degree than the previous one. So now we are in the situation that we live in an apartment, which is, according to the laws of Vastu, at least broadly, suitable for all of us. However, we are still dreaming of our house, which one day will be tailored to us and our horoscopes.
Nature supports those, who follows its laws. Life in a place which conforms to the Vastu Shastra principles is more balanced in all fields than the one that isn’t. We have experienced it in our lives, and we are ready to help our readers and disciples to find their harmonious living space, providing you with our knowledge, and assistance in assessing your current home or workplace. The more thought-out the premises, the happier people. We hope that you will be among them! Om
