MUI: MUSIC UNDER INFLUENCE

When you live a lifestyle that’s consciousness transforming and cleansing (and I mean live, not just hang on), then you experience not only the changes in your life, but also the perception of music and culture in general. You develop the ability to distinguish between music composed in the sattvic, rajasic or tamasic state of consciousness. Unfortunately the latter is the most, because many composers use various means of getting high in order to welcome the muse. One may only create once being in a state of non-anxiety and freedom. To reach that, one have to meditate and learn how to relax oneself. But reality is that people use the "shortcuts" to the muse and therefore listeners find themselves surrounded by the supply of music, that radiates tamasic vibrations. And if you think that its only some underground hardcore music that's being created that way, then you are seriously wrong. There are so many world's masterpieces in all genres composed in such circumstances. The same applies to the other forms of art like literature, painting, theatre etc. Many well known and acknowledged maestroes, composers, performers, even classics, hall-of-fame geniuses and museum artists are among those who created their masterpieces in a state of consciousness that has been altered by tamas. Every artist finds its audience amongst the like vibrating souls of spectators, listeners and consumers of art and these masses proclaim the works of addicts to be the greatest of all mankind.

How can you measure the vibration of your soul? Take a look at your music playlist. What do you know about the authors of that music? What is the meaning of the lyrics of your favourite song this summer? And why this particular song is what moves you? Answer these questions before you consume vibrations made by other people. You probably read the ingredient list on the packaging of the food in store. I hope you do. So do the same with the music and art you take in. Read the biographies, the background storties, the history behind the art.

I went to a concert recently. A band of my school days performed. I had goosebumps the moment they went on stage, but then… nothing. I understood that the vibration of my consciousness doesn’t resemble that of the band’s anymore. I may appreciate the talent of certain musicians, who have mastered the instruments, but the tracks… they just pass me by. Music is the food for consciousness, for soul. It’s called rasa in Āyurveda (rasa means food, flavour in sanskrit). Rasa creates the mood and forms the state of consciousness. Music and other forms of art that are made or performed under the influence of different substances, does not refer to me like a steak that’s been served to the hungry by the neighboring table. Good music is to be searched for, just like good vegetarian food in the menus. It has to be almost tracked down, the waitress has to be questioned and research has to be done. Good books, paintings, theatre performances have to be searched for the same way.

What is sattvic music? It is Rāgas. Ancient music from vedic times, which was composed in the meditative state of consciousness and it radiates unconditional love. The soul enters the state of harmony and balance, while listening to such music.
Classical music has a positive influence too, but not all of it. It means, that you can’t just tune into classical radio and listen to whatever is poured out of speakers. Be choosy towards whatever is “served” on your musical “plate”. Bon appetit to all of us, who wants to enjoy the wholesome vibes! Om
