I have been asked some questions about the children’s speech disorders and problems of pronunciation from several parents. It turns out to be quite a popular problem. So, I came up with the idea of another blog post.
The speech itself is a manifestation of Saraswati Nādī – an energy channel, which is streaming the prāna (similar to blood flowing through the vessels) that forms and determines the human speech. If the flow of energy in this prānic artery is clear and clog free, then there is no reason for having hindrances in speech development. Saraswati Nādī is located in the subtle body. Although it can not be examined by any instruments, its well-known in Ayurveda that it starts in the central cavity of the collar-bone, travels up through the throat and mouth and ends at the tip of the tongue. It is a route for a person’s ability to speak out, express own opinion, dare to reach out for goal and, of course, speech and language learning ability.
If this Nādī is blocked and prāna has the difficulty to move, then it may result in logopedic problems, thyroid gland disorders, pain in the throat, voice chords’ inflammation, diseases of mouth and tongue. Only to name a few. And besides that, a person might find it difficult to declare his own opinion and express himself in any way.
Actions that lead to the blocking of Saraswati Nādī:
- The use of pacifier as a cork to shut up the baby’s mouth is literally like telling a person that his/her opinion is of no meaning to anyone. Vedas teach us to treat others as we would like to be treated. I don’t thing anyone would appreciate a silicone item stuck into mouth at the moment of asking for food or expressing one’s thoughts. Baby’s cry is a noise, of course, and it should be, but it makes young parents frustrated, especially in the public. Usage of pacifier in order to just “mute” a child, instead of addressing the cause of the cry, might block the flow in the Sarasvati Nādī.
- “Shut up!” “Quiet!” “Can you keep your mouth shut?!” – yeah, you got it, I guess. Never ever use these expressions towards anyone in any age. I think no more comment necessary here.
- If your child is addressed to by another person, then please try to refrain yourself from answering in your child’s place. I know, kids are shy sometimes, when unfamiliar adults talks to them. It makes parents feel a little bit awkward, if a child doesn’t answer at once. But try to wait a little bit. Sometimes it takes a longer time for kids to get themselves together. They want to answer, but it just takes them a longer time to compose. If a child moves away or shows with the body language that he/she doesn’t want to talk, then please don’t insist on answering the adult. Explain the situation to adult, but don’t be sorry. And don’t answer instead of your child.
Actions that open up Saraswati Nādī:
- Children need a freedom to express their opinion and a feeling that their opinion is taken into account. It doesn’t mean you have to always agree with it. But at least try to discuss the situation of different opinions and decisions in a normal and quiet manner.
- Singing is just perfect for making the prāna flow more freely in Saraswati Nādī, and moreover, it’s quite beneficial for child’s development in general. You don’t have to take a child to a choir, but at least listen to different kinds of music at home, sing along in the car and dance with your kids. Movement is another means of expression.
- Remember, there are no “bad” emotions. Don’t scold your child for being angry or having a tantrum. Don’t ever say to a boy that real men don’t cry. Misunderstanding of own emotions and suppressed feelings might cause quite a handful of problems not only with the speech, but also with the physical and mental health.
There are a lot vedic mantras for Saraswati Nādī “cleansing” and balancing Vishudha chakra. It’s important to choose the right treatment, for every case of speech problems is unique. Mantras can be chanted not only for the treatment purposes, but also for making language learning and studying much easier. Saraswati is a goddess of studying as well. Om
